2017 CCBA Nominee
Another CCBA nominee. This is pretty heavy for a children's book. Young Peter, still grieving his mother who died some years earlier, has adopted and raised a fox, Pax. When war breaks out, Peter is forced to abandon Pax, and is sent to live with his grandfather while his father enlists. Peter is heartbroken, and Pax is bewildered. Pax decides that Peter would never leave him, and resolves to wait for him. Peter, hundreds of miles away, determines to run away and find Pax. Both must learn how to survive -- Peter by traveling at night, and by seeking help when he is injured, and Pax by learning how to be a fox. The horrors of war come terrifyingly and devastatingly close in this story, which left me feeling very melancholy. 2016-2017 Parmalee 5th graders may remember this story as the one shared by Storyteller Mr. Jim in May, 2016.
