The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart
2017 CCBA nominee
This 3-hanky read is a 2017 CCBA nominee. Mark runs away from home with a crazy plan to climb Mount Rainier. This was something he and his grandfather had planned together, but his grandfather got sick and passed away, and Mark, who has been battling cancer for much of his young life, knows his own days are numbered. He sets off with his dog and a plan to keep searchers looking in the wrong places. Mark carries a lot of anger. It is very possible that his plan will result in his death, but he feels he is entitled to pursue a dream, and have some measure of control of one thing at least: the time and place of his death. The story alternates between Mark's harrowing experience and his best friend Jessie, who is charged with keeping his secret, and is torn between wanting him back, wanting his parents' worry to ease, and wanting to do right by her dying friend. Keep the tissues close.
