Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar
2017 CCBA Nominee
A 2017 Colorado Children's Book Award nominee. Tamaya and Marshall walk home together every day after school, but after Marshall is bullied and threatened by class menace Chad, Marshall tries to avoid Chad by taking a shortcut through the woods. Tamaya nearly falls into some strange, yellowish fuzzy mud while in the woods, and when Chad catches up to them and attacks Marshall, Tamaya throws a handful of it into Chad's face and they escape. The next day Tamaya has broken out into oozing blisters, and Chad is missing. Interspersed with the school/bullying story are transcripts of top-secret Senate committee hearings discussing the origins and potential dangers of Biolene, a bioengineered form of energy that seems too good to be true, and potentially devastating if uncontrolled. As the two stories merge, Mr. Sachar weaves a menacing and heart pounding narrative that keeps the pages turning.
