I read the middle-grade novel The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher pretty much in one sitting. And loved it. This is a gentle family story, often billed as a successor of The Penderwicks, which is one of my favorite series of all time. While The Penderwicks features a widowed dad and four daughters, The Family Fletcher features two dads and four adopted boys. The boys (and dads) have very distinct personalities and strengths: 6th grader Sam, the star athlete and purveyor of cool; 4th grader Jax, hoping to get a start-of-year "cool boost" from Sam, and to find his niche in the classroom and on the playground. 4th grader (but younger than Jax) Eli, excited to start at a new school for gifted students who crave academic rigor, and 6 year-old Jeremiah (commonly known as Frog), starting kindergarten with his imaginary cheetah Flare. The book follows the family through the school year.
